The Path of a Mercenary
If you are too restless for the path of commerce, you can choose a more
dangerous route, the path of a Mercenary. Running a manufacturing business
leaves most empires with little resources for defense or attack, thus you can
provide these services to other players for a fee. The simplest service you can
provide is defense, especially to new players. New players will need a strong
protector since they will be virtually defenseless. New players may not have
many credits, but they will have lots of raw material. The kind of raw material
you will need to build out your powerful mercenary fleet. With a little
negotiation, you can probably come to a fair barter agreement.
If you are really looking to get into a scuffle, you can search out a somewhat
more aggressive empire. For example, an empire may want to ensure an agreement
with a supplier by force. This could involve sending a mercenary to another
empire to force the sale of previously agreed upon items or exacting a penalty
for reneging on an agreement.
No matter how you play being a Mercenary, you are signing yourself up for war.
If you pursue aggressive tactics, you most likely will face bounties from the
Galactic Council. These bounties can be avoided if you have a Mutual Defense
Alliance with the empire you are working for and they are already at war with
the empire they want you to attack. However, the most profitable endeavors will
be where an empire wants you to commit naked aggression against another empire.
If you do this, make sure you have plenty of firepower. You will need it.
