Galactic Pathways FAQ
Q: Is there a goal or victory condition in Galactic Pathways? A: Galactic Pathways is about community building. The game is designed so it is very difficult to be self-sufficient. Players should form alliances with others for mutual benefit. Each empire should try to specialize in a few services and offer those services for sale to other players. The goal of the game is to form alliances so your community can be successful.
Q: Does combat have a place in Galactic Pathways? A: Yes. Even though Galactic Pathways is about community building, some players may feel their community needs to expand by force. Thus combat does have a significant role in the game. It can be as big or little as you would like. It all depends on how you define your community.
Q: What happens when I’m not logged in? A: When you are not logged in, your game is frozen. You don't build anything, you don't discover anything and your starships don’t move. You can't be overtly attacked but you can be hit with covert (Spy sabotage) attacks. Thus, having a defensive improvement (such as Planetary Fortifications) at all of your planets is a good idea.
Q: Can I do anything when I’m not logged in? A: The items you have for sale can be purchased and your ads will continue to be displayed. Thus it's always good to offer items for sale since they can be purchased even when you're not playing.
Q: How do you form a fleet? What are the benefits of a fleet? A: In the orbital view, drag and drop the starship you want to add to a fleet over the “fleet leader” starship. The fleet leader will be the starship that is visibly displayed. All other starships in the fleet will be hidden. It is wise to have transport starships escorted by military starships. To do this, you must form a fleet and it is best to have the transport starship be the fleet leader. This way other players cannot see how strong your military escort starship is. In addition, only the fleet leader can interact with other planets. Thus if you want to trade with another planet, drag the fleet leader (your transport starship) on top of the planet as you normally would. If there is an embargo, your military escort will defend your transport starship. You transport starship will then be able to trade with the planet.
Q: How can my planets be attacked and how do I defend against attacks? A: Planets can be attacked in 3 ways:
Only units specifically assigned to defense will defend your planet. So at the minimum, be sure to keep a few ground units in the settlement defense area. A better defense is to have a few starships in the planetary defense area in the Orbital View. In addition, you can build improvements (Planetary Fortifications, Planetary Shielding, etc…) to increase your defense.
Q: Can my traveling starships be attacked? A: No. Starships can only be attacked when they are in orbit around a planet.
Q: Will my military starships in orbit automatically defend my planet? A: No. Only starships in the Planetary Defense area will defend your planet. Any starships in the Planetary Defense area will also gain the use of planetary shielding improvements that were built at the planet.
Q: When 2 fleets meet in battle, how does the fight proceed? A: The strongest defender in the defending fleet will defend the entire defense force until the defender is destroyed. Then the next strongest defender in the fleet will defend. However for attackers, each attacking unit in the fleet will attack in turn against the strongest defending unit. This gives a bit of an advantage to defense.
Q: When do units take damage rather than being destroyed? A: If the 2 units doing battle are close in strength, then both units will take damage. However if one unit is a lot stronger, then the stronger unit may win outright and destroy the other unit.
Q: When I capture a planet, what do I get? A: You capture the planet as it is, decked out with everything that was built there. In addition, you capture all units (Settlers, Ground Units and Starships) supported by the planet.
Q: How do I turn off the sound? A: Turning off sound is built into the Adobe SVG viewer, just right-click on the game screen and select mute.
Q: I’m having trouble clicking on my starships in the Galaxy Map. What can I do to make this easier?
A: The Adobe SVG viewer supports zooming. On Windows machines, just right-click and select “Zoom In” from the pop-up menu. You can reposition the view by holding down the Alt key and moving the mouse. After you are done, right-click and select “Original View” from the pop-up menu. Zooming is supported on non-Windows machines, but may have a different method to right-click or move the current view.
Q: What are Galactic Council Bounties and how do they work?
A: If an empire commits naked aggression against another empire (defined as attacking an empire you are at peace with), then the Galactic Council will impose a bounty on the aggressor. Other empires can then collect this bounty by attacking the aggressor empire. The bounty is awarded for every attack, win or lose. For example, if an empire has a bounty of 1000 credits, you will collect 1000 credits for each attack you commence. The purpose of bounties is to punish evil empires and encourage peaceful relations.
Q: How can I focus my prospecting efforts to discover the type of resources I need? A: Prospecting finds what is most likely to be found on the type of planet you are prospecting at. Here is what is most likely to be found at each planet type:
Q: What does the Attack Enemy Starships area in the Orbital View do? A: Military starships placed in the Attack Enemy Starships area will automatically attack any enemy starship (a starship from an empire you are at war with) that enters orbit. Your starships will attack only once.
